There are many different types of furnaces, each operating in a distinct manner. Electric furnaces are specialized equipment, and Cates Heating and Cooling recognizes that some individuals—particularly in regions where gas furnaces are more prevalent—may not fully understand how an electric furnace heats a home. We are here to provide a clear explanation.

In certain areas and specific circumstances, electric furnaces can be a more suitable choice compared to other furnace types. They operate similarly to gas furnaces but utilize electricity to generate heat rather than gas. Consequently, electric furnaces employ electric heating elements instead of gas burners.

Electric furnaces operate similarly to a hair dryer by drawing air into the system and passing it through a heat exchanger. Inside the heat exchanger, electric heating elements heat the air, which is then circulated by the blower through the ductwork to distribute warm air throughout the rooms of your home.

These furnaces contain three to six electric-resistance heating elements, each ranging from 3.5 to 7 kW. These elements function similarly to toaster heating elements, where electrically charged particles pass through metal wires, generating heat. The heating elements consist of long wires coiled tightly and installed within the furnace.

Additional key components of an electric furnace include the contactor, sequencer, and transformer. The contactor regulates the voltage supplied to the furnace’s heating elements and works in conjunction with the thermostat to signal the furnace when to generate heat.

The sequencer controls the activation and deactivation of your heating elements, helping to reduce current surges. Since heating elements require little energy to become energized, the sequencer is essential to prevent all elements from turning on simultaneously, which could trip a circuit breaker.

The transformer supplies power to the control circuits of the thermostat, contactors, and sequencers in your electric furnace. It transfers electrical energy between circuits, enabling multiple currents to flow seamlessly within the furnace and ensuring consistent operation.
